چکیده

[1] A merged TOPEX/POSEIDON and ERS-1/2 altimeter data set is used to estimate nonseasonal variations of sea surface height (SSH) in the Japan/East Sea (JES) from October 1992 through February 2002. The altimeter data have a good correlation (0.95) with tide gauge data in the western JES. The nonseasonal variability of the SSH is higher in the southern warm region than in the northern cold region. The root-mean square value of the nonseasonal SSH is 5–10 cm in the southern area, whereas it is about 4 cm in the northern area. Empirical orthogonal function analysis of the nonseasonal SSH shows the first mode to be related to intraseasonal oscillations over the entire JES and the second mode to interannual path variations of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC). The path change of the TWC is responsible for the high variability of SSH in the southern region.

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE De-Aliasing of Large-Scale High-Frequency Barotropic Signals from Satellite Altimetry in the Japan/East Sea

In the Japan/East Sea, energetic high-frequency large-scale barotropic motions are shown to lead to large aliasing errors in satellite altimetry observations. The combined aliasing from several neighboring and crossing tracks produces artificial mesoscale signals in altimeter-mapped products, significantly changing the map interpretation. The alias can be well suppressed by subtracting the larg...

Sea Level Change in the Malaysian Seas from Multi-satellite Altimeter Data

The long-term sea level change during 1993 – 2008 is investigated in the Malaysian Seas from satellite altimetry data of the Topex, Jason-1, ERS-1, ERS-2 and Envisat missions. During the past two decades, satellite altimeter has provided its capability in measuring the global mean of sea level with precision better than 1 mm/year. Sea level data retrieval and reduction were carried out using Ra...

Long-term sea level change in the Malaysian seas from multi-mission altimetry data

The long-term sea level change during 1993 to 2008 was investigated in the Malaysian seas from satellite altimetry data of the TOPEX, JASON-1, ERS-1, ERS-2 and ENVISAT missions. Sea level data retrieval and reduction were carried out using the radar altimeter database system (RADS). In RADS data processing, the 2008 updated environmental and geophysical corrections were applied. Six 1° × 1° are...

Mapping mesoscale currents by optimal interpolation of satellite radiometer and altimeter data

Mapping the mesoscale surface velocity stream function by combining estimates of surface height from satellite altimetry and surface currents from sequential infrared (sea-surface temperature) imagery using optimal interpolation is described. Surface currents are computed from infrared images by the method of maximum crosscorrelations (MCC) and are combined with altimeter sealevel anomaly data ...

Multi-Mission Cross-Calibration of Satellite Altimeters: Constructing a Long-Term Data Record for Global and Regional Sea Level Change Studies

Climate studies require long data records extending the lifetime of a single remote sensing satellite mission. Precise satellite altimetry exploring global and regional evolution of the sea level has now completed a two decade data record. A consistent long-term data record has to be constructed from a sequence of different, partly overlapping altimeter systems which have to be carefully cross-...
